Moves by some British consumers to boycott Kenyan fresh produce has more to do with protectionism than with a genuine concern for the environment. The concept that this latest hysteria is based on -- the food mile -- is an unscientific measure of pollution, given respectability by the British government. It looks at the number of miles a product has travelled from the farm to the UK, the further, the "worse". .
Orchids in bloom
Museums are generally considered an inside activity, and gardens an outside one. However, the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx combines these concepts.
In the words of Todd Forrest, the gardens vice president for Horticulture and Living Collections, the facility, founded in 1891, is more than a beautiful place; its a living museum of plants.
With its extensive grounds and large, lovely buildings, the Botanical Garden shelters the outdoors, and entices indoorsy types to spend hours in the fresh air.
Few exhibitions draw more visitors or promote the gardens mission like the annual Orchid Show exhibition and sale, running through April 8.
Orchids are the perfect plant to reflect the gardens role as a museum of plants, Forest said.
